CSIA Club and council application: Processes and problems

The new CSIA students of 2024, especially high schoolers, have been facing a busy week. The reason is club applications. New students are determined to join the clubs that they want. However, some prestigious clubs do not allow every student to join. Clubs popular with students have rigorous selection processes like application essays or interviews to limit the number of people in that club. Famous academic clubs like CELLAR(biology study club) and VANK (International Relations Club), each with excessive applicants, are said to have the most rigorous processes, the interviews comprising science questions or questions related to history. However, not all of the clubs that have selection processes are academic. For example, Orpheus (cheerleading club) and NG (student dance group) also have a selection process of interviews and show off the applicant's dance skills. Meanwhile, some high school freshmen are making their clubs. Though primarily composed of the same freshmen, some also advertise their clubs to the seniors and juniors.

However, there is competition to apply for a particular student council department besides school clubs. The student council differs from school clubs because they mainly focus on school activities and community service rather than academics or athletics like some clubs. In CSIA, there are currently 9 student departments: promoting, prefect, environment, athletics, planning, academic support, communications, broadcasting, and club department. The same is true for clubs; some student departments show excessive applicants for many reasons. For example, the most popular departments are the academic support department, the school promoting department, and the school prefect department. The academic support department has shown the most applicants so far, more than forty people. However, unlike some clubs, nearly all departments have interviews and application processes for the most hardworking and best candidates to work in that department for the school year.

However, there have also been some problems with recruiting and the interviews. Some students have complained that specific departments have been asking excessive privacy-invading questions or questions that force students to sing, dance, or mimic certain animal sounds. These questions irrelevant to the department have brought various complaints among the school. Also, some students have started to spread rumors around the school regarding interview questions for student council member selection. Therefore, court members supervise each interview and investigate to take disciplinary action if there is an inappropriate interview. They have also made a Google form in case a student believes what they have experienced is a violation of the by-laws of the student court. The student court is also asking students to please refrain from criticizing the student council after hearing rumors related to the student council interview.

Though there are complaints regarding interview processes and selections, many students still apply to those clubs or student councils. Part of that reason is for their school records and they want to be a part of something. Being a part of a club or student council brings many benefits, like fun activities or being connected to juniors and seniors who can help them adjust to school. Speaking for THE QUILL and its readers, we wish these complaints would ultimately be solved and help the school create a better community for everyone.
