PAPS in School: Evaluating Student Health and Fitness

On September 12th, the middle school students participated in the Physical Activity Promotion System (PAPS). It tests the students’ health and fitness, and helps those that are a bit behind. Consisting of push-ups, long jumps, flexibility tests, and long-distance running, the examination took place in the gymnasium, from the 2nd period till lunch time.

The students rotated around the four stations by their years and classes. For my class, MS2-4, we did the push-ups first, then proceeded with the flexibility test. After that, we completed the long jumps, took a short break, then participated in the long-distance run. All of the items above are evaluated on a scale of 5 grades, the 1st accounting for the highest percentile.

The cutline for the 1st grade of push-ups for girls was 50. The students put their hands on a metal bar, lowered themselves down and back up again. The girls were allowed to put their knees on the floor. For the flexibility test, everyone sat down, with their feet against a box that is used to measure the length that they can extend their body. Finishing the flexibility test, the students going on the mat to participate in long-jumps, the students went to their classes to have a break.

After the students completed the examination, everyone felt exhausted yet refreshed. One anonymous 2nd grader said that after they did the PAPS, they realized they needed to work out more, and that they felt healthier after exercising. It has been a great chance to move their bodies after a long time and reflect on how much they exercise everyday.
